Municipal sewage is one of the major sources of pollution, behind industrial wastewater. Every day, a large amount of domestic sewages containing faecal sludge and used water from residences is generated in our daily lives. These domestic sewages likely contains high percentage of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus which will produce odorous substances with the action of anaerobic bacteria. Leaving the untreated domestic wastewater to be discharged directly into the environment would cause significant harm to water bodies, and endanger human health.
The main techniques of municipal wastewater treatment include biological treatment, chemical treatment and physical treatment processes. Since there is higher content of organic matter in domestic and municipal wastewater, when BOD5/CODCr ratio is 0.5 or greater, then the wastewater is considered to be easily biodegradable. It means that biological treatment is the most cost-effective way to greatly reduce the organic content of the sewage. A complete municipal wastewater treatment process consists of pre-treatment (physical filtration), secondary treatment (biological and chemical treatment), a deep treatment means such as MBR (Membrane bioreactor) can be carried out after above processes for applications that require high quality of reuse effluent.
